Workdays
A skincare routine that fits a workday
Workdays punish long routines. The useful version is fast in the morning, honest about makeup and air-conditioning, and still gets a proper cleanse at night so products actually reach skin.
An office-day skincare routine is a short AM stack, cleanse or rinse, moisturizer, sunscreen, with makeup going on after sunscreen has settled, then a thorough evening cleanse to remove SPF and makeup before any night treatment. Keep extra steps for days you are not commuting. Air-conditioning dries skin, so skip skipping moisturizer just because you sit indoors.
Mornings that have to finish before you leave
A workday morning routine should be timed against the door, not against an ideal ten-step chart. The steps that earn their minutes are a gentle cleanse or water rinse, a moisturizer that will sit under sunscreen, and sunscreen as the last skincare step. Antioxidant serums can stay if they already fit; they should not be why you skip SPF.
If you wear makeup, give sunscreen a minute to settle so it does not pill under primer. Makeup is not a substitute for sunscreen. A tinted SPF can fill both jobs for people who want fewer layers, as long as you apply enough of it.
Indoors is not a reason to skip protection or moisture
Office lighting is not the same as UV, but commuting, sitting near windows, and walking at lunch still add exposure. Daily sunscreen remains the last AM step on office days. Indoor heating and air-conditioning pull water from skin, which is why faces feel tight by late afternoon even when you never went outside.
A midday moisturizer or a hydrating mist is optional. Reapplying sunscreen over makeup is awkward; a powder SPF or a careful extra layer before lunch is more realistic than pretending you will redo a full AM stack at your desk.
- AM: cleanse or rinse, moisturizer, sunscreen, then makeup
- Do not skip moisturizer because you work indoors
- Keep a lip balm and, if you commute, a compact SPF for the walk
- PM: remove makeup and sunscreen fully before night products
The evening reset is the real office-day treatment
SPF, pollution, and makeup sit on the surface all day. Night is when a double cleanse earns its place if you wear long-wear foundation or waterproof mascara; if you do not, one thorough cleanse is enough. Then moisturizer, and any retinoid or treatment you already tolerate, on a schedule you can keep on weeknights.
Gym-after-work days need a wash as soon as you can, not hours later in the same makeup. If that collapses the night routine, use the fallback: cleanse and moisturize, and save the active for the next night.
Keep an Office Day stack instead of rewriting the routine each morning
Default and office mornings are often different lengths. If your weekend routine includes extras you will never do before a commute, they should not be sitting in the same list you see at 7:15am. A named office stack removes that negotiation.
SkinRitual ships an Office Day routine type for this: a separate AM and PM plan you switch to on workdays, with the same reminders and logging. When the day is actually a weekend, switch back. The point is not more complexity; it is one fewer decision when you are already late.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put makeup on before sunscreen?
No. Sunscreen is the last skincare step in the morning. Makeup goes on after it has settled. A tinted sunscreen can replace a separate foundation layer if you apply enough of it.
Do I need sunscreen if I work in an office?
Yes if you commute, sit near windows, or go out at lunch. UV exposure is not limited to beach days. Daily AM sunscreen is still the highest-value habit.
How do I wear sunscreen under makeup without pilling?
Use a sunscreen that already agrees with your makeup, apply a thin even layer, and wait a minute before primer. Adding extra serums underneath is a common cause of pilling.
Does SkinRitual have an office routine type?
Yes. Office Day is one of the shipped routine types, with its own AM and PM stacks, so weekday mornings can stay shorter than your Default plan.
