Reminders
How to remember your skincare routine (without relying on willpower)
Forgetting a routine is usually a timing problem, not a motivation problem. Mornings get compressed; evenings dissolve into the couch. A reminder that fires at the wrong time is almost as useless as no reminder at all.
Remember a skincare routine by pairing it with something you already do, then adding a reminder for the session you still miss. Set a morning reminder before you leave the house and an evening reminder at the time you actually wind down, not a generic 9pm. Keep a two-step fallback so a late night is a shorter routine, not a skipped one.
Why people forget, even when they care
Skincare has no built-in cue. Teeth get brushed because they feel furry; meals happen because you get hungry. A serum sitting in a cabinet does not create that signal, so the habit competes with every other evening pull: messages, a show, going straight to bed. Morning skips are usually a clock problem: the routine is longer than the minutes left before you need to leave.
Willpower is a poor fix for either case. The reliable version is a cue you cannot miss, plus a routine short enough to complete after the cue fires.
Set reminders at the time you actually do the routine
A skincare reminder only works if it arrives while the routine is still realistic. Morning alerts that fire after you have already left, or evening alerts that fire while you are still at dinner, train you to dismiss them. Pick the time from your real week, not an aspirational one: after brushing teeth, after washing your face in the shower, or when you put your phone on charge.
Treat AM and PM as separate problems. Many people never miss sunscreen and still drop the night stack. Enable only the reminder you actually miss if two notifications feel noisy; one well-timed nudge beats two ignored ones.
- Morning: fire before you usually leave, with enough minutes for cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen
- Evening: fire at wind-down, not at a round hour you are never home
- Keep iOS notification permission on, or the reminder cannot arrive
- If you keep dismissing it, move the time rather than turning it off
Make the products and the fallback obvious
Reminders get you to the sink; layout gets you through the steps. Leave the AM products in application order where you stand in the morning, and the PM products where you actually wash at night. A cabinet you have to remember to open is another chance to skip.
Decide the exhausted-night version in advance: cleanse and moisturize, or rinse, moisturize, and sunscreen in the morning. A planned fallback is still the habit. An unplanned skip is how the next night gets skipped too.
What a skincare reminder app is for
Phone calendar events work until they blend into everything else. A dedicated AM/PM reminder is useful because it is attached to a checklist, not a floating alert: you open the session, complete the steps, and optionally log how skin felt. The reminder is the cue; completion is the record.
SkinRitual is built that way. Morning and evening reminders are independent local iOS notifications, with no account required. You choose the times, enable one or both, and the home screen session is the checklist that follows. A reminder does not prove the routine happened; marking the session complete does.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time for a skincare reminder?
The time you actually stand at the sink. For most people that is shortly after waking for AM, and at wind-down for PM, not a generic 9:00. Move the time if you keep dismissing it.
Do I need both morning and evening reminders?
No. Enable the session you miss. Many people only need a PM reminder because mornings already attach to getting ready.
Why did my skincare reminder not arrive?
Check that notifications are allowed for the app in iOS Settings, that the reminder is enabled, and that the time is correct. Local reminders cannot fire if permission was denied.
Can SkinRitual remind me separately for AM and PM?
Yes. Morning and evening reminders are separate settings. The app stores them locally and uses iOS notifications without requiring an account.
